Cocoa Brown launched four years ago with the world’s first 1 HOUR TAN and has since gained cult-status internationally amongst celebrities and beauty editors, from the pages of Teen Vogue to The Oscars red carpet.
Cocoa Brown products are sold in almost 15,000 stores around the world, from the UK to Scandinavia, North America, Russia, Australia and Europe.
I’m the eldest of eight children and grew up being taught by my parents that hard work, tenacity and a kind spirit would take me as far in life as I wanted to go. Unable to afford to attend beauty college, I was sponsored by The Galligan Beauty College and qualified with honours as a Beauty Therapist thanks to the generosity of two incredible women, Lorraine and Careena Galligan.
I taught Beauty Therapy for two years before opening my first business, Carter Beauty Salon – in the laundry room of a house I was renting in 2006. The business relocated and expanded and by 2012 was one of Ireland’s leading, award-winning beauty salons.
In 2007, I travelled to Philadelphia to complete a certificate in Cosmetic Chemistry and Skin Histology with the Circadia Institute but it wasn’t until 2012 that my brand Cocoa Brown came to life! That year, I gave birth to my first child in March – Charlie, and when he was about three weeks old, I had a spray tan done. I slept with the tan on my skin overnight as was required for the solution to develop on my skin and when I woke up, I was beautifully bronzed but so too was my baby boy! He had slept beside me in the bed and the tan had transferred onto his skin. It was then that I decided to work with a team of cosmetic chemists to create the world’s first 1 HOUR TAN, a tan that didn’t need to develop overnight.
Later that year, in November, Cocoa Brown 1 HOUR TAN hit shelves in Ireland and was a sell-out success. Cocoa Brown now consists of a wardrobe of different products and is available in over 20 countries.
In April 2015, my little girl Belle was born and she already points to Cocoa Brown products in stores and shouts ‘mama’! It’s been a roller-coaster few years and I hope that I can continue to create beauty products that are loved for many, many years to come. My mission as a creator is to provide products for you that are innovative, affordable, beautiful on your dressing table and most importantly make you feel like you can take on the world whilst wearing them!
Be well, be kind and be beautiful,
P.S There is nothing I love more than receiving snaps of you wearing or using CB so don’t be shy – you’ll always get me on Snapchat @CarterMarissa or Instagram @MarissaCarter
